So - Who Is Your Role Model?

One of the blogs I follow deals with controversial subjects such as pro-life, homosexuality, raising children today who have a sense of entitlement.  I love his blog, and I can read his responses for literally hours. Some good, some negative, but always informative.  Here is a link to his blog: The Matt Walsh Blog . It's just so down to earth I find myself amazed that there are people out there that are so ignorant.  And by ignorant I'm talking about misinformed.  Now I am certainly not an authority on any one subject, but it seems to me that the many subjects that come up on this blog are common sense.  (At least they seem to be to me?).

As a Christian, I guess my views are more conservative than most.  What bothers me about this blog, and actually it isn't even the blog itself, it's the responses to the blog from some Christians to other readers.  It really disturbs me when people who are calling themselves Christians are trying to support Matt's point of view or any Christian blog for that matter, with name calling, putting down and negative points of view that are in no way Christ like.  I'm almost embarrassed to say so in the comments that I too am a Christian, because they are lumping "us" all together.

I love Matt's blog because it's controversial, because it's deep and because it creates a great debate between other bloggers and posters, and if nothing else, it makes one think hard and deep about the subject.

So back to my title, "Who Is Your Role Model?"  On one particular blog Matt published recently,  he described how today's music was so degrading, it was offensive.  So offensive to the point it was pornographic.  He used BeyoncĂ© as an example and how the President of the US used her as a role model for his two girls.

Now I myself  am ignorant in the ways of music even some Christian music, but when he quoted the lyrics of a couple of her songs one called "Partition" in particular, I was sickened.  Had the US President even heard the lyrics?  Surely he would not want this woman as a role model for his children if he knew the filth that she spewed out of her mouth?

I was so embarrassed as a Canadian earlier this week to see one of our rather infamous politicians on the Jimmy Kimmel show.  This man was representing Canada?  If I had been in the audience I would be sitting quite low in my seat very uncomfortable.  This?  This is who they chose to speak on behalf of Canada?  Well of course.  He represented all that is gone wrong in our society.  Sexs, drugs and alcohol - AND he is still in our government  office!  And what is particularly sad about this, is that he will probably get re- elected when his term comes up, just because of his notoriety!

I don't know.  I can't say what compells people to have role models such as this.  My husband and I were talking in bed last night about society and how crazy and backwards our role models have become.  Hockey players who make 65 million dollars, young singers who break the law and are not given appropriate sentences.  Actors who portray dysfunctional family life and it's called humour, or even when they themselves are caught up in a world of drug and alcohol abuse, it's almost expected. The recent death's of a couple of actors whose death's were the result of overdosing on drugs, yet we proclaimed how wonderful they were.  I'm not saying they were awful people, obviously they had their problems, but to lift them up and praise them, knowing their battle with drugs and alcohol, makes it seem like they are role models.  That their life styles were secondary to the men they had become. But in reality, the lifestyle WAS who they had become. It consumed them and killed them.  Let's get that message out there.

So - why do we choose these people as role models?

It's distressing.  It shows in our society.  I see young girls in scantily clad clothing and I think, "Where is your mom?  Did she see you leave the house today?"  I don't have the answer other than the obvious one.  The breakdown of the family unit.

In an age where the family unit has changed so drastically there seems to be only one solution.  Only one that I can see anyways.  Prayer.  Prayer for change.  Prayer for our nation to repent, and then ONLY THEN will God heal our Nation.  If we repent and change our ways.

Let's start by changing our role models.  There are so many we can choose from in the Bible, but only one perfect one.  I don't even have speak His name.  You know who He is.
